Your First-time Meeting at Toastmasters in Montreal
Attending a Toastmasters meeting for the first time can feel unfamiliar, especially in a new city or a new language.
This page explains exactly what happens at a Toastmasters meeting in Montreal, what first-time guests can expect, and how to decide whether it’s right for you.
What Is a Toastmasters Meeting Like?
A Toastmasters meeting is a structured, supportive environment where members practice public speaking and leadership skills.
Meetings are designed to be welcoming, practical, and low-pressure. Everyone in the room was once a first-time guest, and newcomers are never expected to perform or participate unless they choose to.
At Moderator Toastmasters, meetings are bilingual. Guests are welcome to observe and use English or French, depending on what they feel most comfortable with. Learn more about who is Toastmasters really for.

Typical Toastmasters Meeting Structure
Each Toastmasters meeting has many roles.
While each club has its own personality, most Toastmasters meetings follow a similar structure:

The meeting begins with a brief introduction and an overview of the agenda.
Business Session
This session covers club business such as new member induction and upcoming activities.
Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking)
This is a short segment where participants answer simple questions spontaneously.
First-time guests are able to participate, but observation is always welcome.
Prepared Speeches
Members deliver short, prepared speeches based on their learning goals. These speeches are planned in advance and are usually 5–7 minutes long. You may learn our upcoming speeches.
Evaluations
Speakers receive constructive, supportive feedback focused on improvement and encouragement.
Closing
The meeting wraps up with announcements and a brief summary.
Most meetings last about 120 minutes.
